Lyft is closing out a busy year for the ride-hailing industry by crowning the top destinations of 2016. For the second annual "Lyftie Awards," the startup revealed Wednesday winners of the most visited locations, including restaurants, bars, hotels, transit stops and event spaces, by its passengers.
The data highlights one of Lyft's regulatory victories in 2016: Approval to pick up and drop off passengers at more airports. While last year transit stops such as bus stops and train stations were the number one drop-off category, airports took the top spot this year.
The awards "represent how people are spending time in their local communities. We love being able to tell those stories. It reflects on what we get excited about which is Lyft being a part of people’s every day lives," Melissa Waters, Lyft's vice president of marketing, told Mashable.
Lyft is now available at 96 airports. LAX recently surpassed SFO as their busiest airport, Waters said.
But not everything changed: The Abbey was once again named the most visited bar.
“We see Lyft cars in front of The Abbey and our new club, The Chapel, all night, every night. Lyft has made things so much more convenient and safe for our guests that we are currently working with the City of West Hollywood to install a permanent drop-off point directly in-front of The Abbey,” David Cooley, the bar's CEO and founder, said in a statement.
Each winner receives free discount codes for riders and a window decal. The Abbey already has a party planned to celebrate is victory. Here are some of the winners for 2016:
